Adopting a Dog Can Fulfill a Special Place in an Individual's Heart
A dog can be a person’s best friend. Whether you’re adopting for yourself or for your family, your new furry friend may be very close. There’s several ways to get a dog, but adoption typically is one of the best ways. The bond between a dog and it’s owner is something truly special. The love and affection that comes from a dog when you treat it right is just special.
The dog adoption process isn’t particularly complex. An adopter finds the right pup and then brings them home. Depending on the adoption agency, there can be some extra steps like a home inspection to make sure that the home is ready for a dog. But aside from that, all you really need to do to adopt a dog is really make sure that you’re ready for the responsibility.
The Adoption Process
Whether you’re adopting from a shelter, rescue, humane society or private individual, there’s always going to be an adoption fee. Some people wonder why they should have to pay for a dog, but this covers their care before they were adopted, as well as their veterinary needs. Adoption fees typically are between $200 and $800 dollars. It should be noted that people who buy puppies from breeders can pay well into the thousands for a pure bred puppy. While an adopted puppy from another location might not have the perfect breed history, it doesn’t mean the dog isn’t going to be healthy and love you any less. Once the dog is confirmed fully healthy, then they get to come home.
Benefits of Adoption
There’s many benefits of adoption and reasons to choose this option over others for getting a dog. Some of the most obvious benefits include:
- Less expensive - Adoption fees are typically much smaller than the fees that breeders charge.
- Humane - Sadly, many shelters and rescues are at capacity with more animals coming in than can be looked after. Many dogs may be terminated despite being wonderful animals and adoption helps give dogs a home theft might never otherwise know.
- Tained and Personality Developed - If you’re adopting a dog that’s already grown, there’s a good chance that it has already been trained. Another important thing is that the dog has had a chance to develop it’s personality so you know what kind of dog you are getting. Is it a needy cuddler? Or is it more of a zoomies and play dog? When you get a puppy, you don’t know these things and it will develop as it goes. There’s no surprise if you choose to adopt an adult dog.
- Helps Mental Health - This applies to adopting, buying, or even getting another kind of pet. Having pets has been proven to help people with their mental health and generally make them smile more. There may be moments of frustration with any pet when they do something “bad”, but the good moments are so much more plentiful! Dogs can help people with depression, stress and anxiety to minimize these problems.
- Helps Physical Health - For a lot of people, adopting a dog means that you’ll suddenly be going for a lot more walks. These may not seem like a big deal, but can actually mean getting a lot more exercise. This can help your overall health and especially your heart health.
Essentially, as long as you’re prepared for the responsibility and are at a place in your life where you can handle the expenses of adopting a dog, then they will manage to make your life better in a wide variety of ways!
